Yes it sucks to spend $200 on a bad antibody. That undoubtedly adds to the cost of doing research. But the total costs of this fraud are *MUCH* larger. Most people recognize the enormous *time* cost of this fraud - every basic scientist has wasted days trying to make bad antibodies work. But what productive use could that time have been used for? What discoveries *weren’t* made because of this? (Opportunity cost) It’s even harder to measure the cost of false positives. How many drug candidates made it to phase 1 testing because of bad antibodies? Is this why so many drugs fail in phase 1? How many patients were harmed by ineffective therapies developed using bad antibodies? (Human cost) How many hundreds of billions do failed phase 1 studies add to the cost of drug development, and indirectly to overall healthcare costs? We’re all paying for this fraud whether you’ve ever pipetted or not. The companies that are deliberately selling bad antibodies should be held accountable for these costs.
"More than 18,000 questionable images found in antibody catalogues of 15 companies" - It's stuff like this that makes bio research so slow

Really incredible work, high-risk viruses are already circulating in wild and farm animals, including CoVs. This underscores the importance of pandemic preparedness research to stop future naturally occurring pandemics. 👇 nature.com/articles/s41586-0

New paper out @Nature - why are males more vulnerable to severe infections (ex acute #COVID), while females suffer more from autoimmunity (SLE, MS etc and also #LongCovid)? sex chromosomes or hormones? Here we studied adaptation of human immune systems to gender-affirming testosterone treatment in trans-men assigned female sex at birth: nature.com/articles/s41586-0

RSV kills 20-30 babies in the UK every year and even milder cases are just miserable, as I know from 2x very sick babies of my own 😱 So great to hear that from 1st September, the UK will be offering an RSV vaccine in pregnancy to protect newborns! đŸ„ł gov.uk/government/publicatio

Curious about many of the cell intrinsic blocks to infection of lentiviruses in our cells? We wrote a (fairly comprehensive) review to help guide you through on this decades-long literature dive. (credit to UW Ph.D. student Joy who did much of the heavy lifting here)

Delighted to be giving the first @VirologyWakate journal club! I'll be talking about a cool evolutionary arms race story between SARS-CoVs and bat immune systems I worked on with @WilsonLabCITIID during our time at the @CVRinfo! This Wed, 7pm Japan time, register below ⬇⬇⬇
We are inviting everyone, especially the young virologists worldwide, to join us for the very first journal club of Wakate Young Virologists Network. Our first speaker is Dr. Spyros Lytras @SpyrosLytras of @SystemsVirology Lab. Please repost! 🩠
