Think you know Seattle hoops?
Then you know the conversation starts with Lenny Wilkens.
Remembering the legend on what would have been his 89th birthday.

Every Big Story Has a Pacific Northwest Connection…
“Perhaps more surprising this election cycle is two owners giving heavily to liberal candidates: New Seahawks owner Vinod Khosla donated $2 million to the Democrats’ Senate arm…”
NFL owners spent about $18 million on the midterms, with the huge majority of that going to Republicans. And then you have Arthur Blank, who donated to AOC frontofficesports.com/articl…

Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans ran and won last year as a strong progressive, so it was no big surprise when she announced a couple weeks ago she is reinstating a version of a therapeutic community court, where non-violent offenders are diverted to try to get them the help and services they need rather than face punishment.
And given that this is Seattle, you might expect that Evans’ new “Connections Court” would replicate the ridiculous neo-abolitionist Woke 1 principles that undergirded Seattle’s previous version of community court, formed in 2019, where there were essentially no consequences for not showing up (and no meaningful help offered to those who did), which is what led Evans’ Republican predecessor to unwind it.
But you would be wrong.
Erika Evans just joined us on @RealSeattleNice (link to follow) to explain why she’s making “accountability” a centerpiece of the new court, why she is also implementing a new approach to get tougher on repeat offenders, and why she liked what she saw on a recent visit to San Francisco regarding the new less permissive approaches to street disorder they’re putting in place there.
Even in Seattle, vibes are shifting. Not the approaches you would have expected from the new progressive City Attorney!

Replying to @PeterMoskos
@PeterMoskos spent the better part of two years as a cop patrolling the mean streets of East Baltimore on the midnight to 8 am shift, then he went on to get a Harvard Ph.D. and now teaches at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in NYC.
Peter has strong, well informed opinions about what blue city progressives get wrong about crime and about policing, so @hyded and I invited him to join us on BCB to talk about what good policing looks like, and what impact that has on criminal activity.
This turned into a fascinating @bluecitypodcast conversation about what works - and what doesn't - when it comes to maintaining order and quality of life in big American cities.
I do like me a good podcast appearance. The latest just dropped: Blue City Blues.

Very big ruling today from the appeals court on Seattle’s tenant protections. For the first time a court has basically said there is a limit to how far govt can go before it’s a “taking”

Totally correct that a hungry, politically savvy and talented young campaign staffer can sometimes make all the difference in a campaign.
Every cycle, young campaign staffers grind it out trying to help a candidate get elected. They are unseen. They just keep their heads down and do their job.
The MVP of this cycle may be @tysonbrody, the opposition researcher for @RevAdamHamilton.
Great article in @politico about him and his work and how it may get you the first Democratic Senator in KS in 94 years.
You can bet your ass his parents printed this article and it is hanging on the refrigerator.

Every city should have an @realEstateTrent that explains the real life in a city.
Last week, friends with young kids came to visit us from the suburbs in California.
As we ran around Manhattan together, they looked at us and asked, “How do you do this all the time? How do you raise young kids in New York City? Do you have to get in the car every time you go somewhere? This seems crazy.”
I smiled and told them that, for us, raising kids in the city is actually easier than raising them in the suburbs.
We never think about getting in the car.
The grocery store is two blocks away. The kids’ doctor is two blocks away. There’s a Barnes & Noble six minutes away on foot.
We walk to the Met, the Natural History Museum, and Central Park.
We walk to get coffee. There are playgrounds and playdates everywhere. Our building is full of kids their age, and so is our block.
Once you get past the idea that raising kids in the city must be complicated, the day-to-day reality is pretty simple.
We just walk out the door.
And honestly, raising kids in the city is actually a whole lot easier than raising them in the suburbs.
I thought this was Deception Pass for a sec then realized it was the Aurora Bridge. Seattle is stunning.

I'm excited for the @USNavy’s planned investment in Bremerton to modernize the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, a vital part of this community for over 100 years. Bremerton is home to one of just four public Navy shipyards.
This is a big win for jobs and the local economy.

An incredible labor of love over years to install markers for more than 3200 people buried from Western State Hosp. at Ft Steilacoom Park between 1879 and 1953. These folks were doctors, veterans, teachers and from all walks of life. We placed the last marker there on 10.10. 1/2
