Jeez. A woman I know and care about is fighting for her life, has lost a leg, and people are already fighting over whether the man accused of attacking her is a left-wing extremist, a right-wing extremist, a Nazi, a One Nation supporter, a cooker or a tree-hugger, a Zionist or a ‘Hamas supporter’. And on and on it goes. Who does he ‘belong’ to? So we can justify, excuse or condemn, according to who we ‘belong’ to. Apparently the important thing is to establish whose problem Brendan Nugent is. I know Helen Haines well. She was a nurse, then a midwife. She’s one of those rare politicians who actually turns up, listens and gives a shit. She’s met with us many times about the NDIS. The ABC reports she’s critically injured and has lost a leg. I wish I wasn’t writing that. My heart hurts, thinking about it. After listening to us fight to keep our supports, she will need them herself. If she survives this awful, awful, senseless attack. And senseless is the word. Police have Brendan Nugent in custody. They are investigating his motive. I know nothing about his health history. I don’t know if he’s ever applied for the NDIS, been refused entry or had support taken away. Neither do the people guessing on social media. A social media commentator says they attended a school reunion with him recently. They say he hit a man in the head with a brick, in Woolies. That sounds senseless, too. But I do know this. Between July and December 2025, the NDIA decided 4,272 access applications from people with psychosocial disability. Almost 2,950 were refused. Only 31% got in. Then, between April and June 2026, the NDIA revoked access for 5,855 existing participants across all disability groups. I’ve not found a psychosocial breakdown. My own kid has autism, ADHD and schizophrenia. He’s a beautiful, talented young man, and I am proud of him every day for getting up and continuing to fight. He’s frightened, not violent. He’s creative, clever and feels too much about everything, including for other humans. And he hasn’t even applied for the NDIS because these days, there’s no point. I want to know what this guy’s history is. Not just of any mental health struggles, but what support he had and tried to access. My own kid lived in Melbourne for two years, and that’s the heart of the city. I know what’s available and what’s not. So yes, I want to know what happens to people who are turned away. Where they go. Who checks on them. How much support their families have. And why we have become so accustomed to treating people who need help as a budgetary problem or, conversely, an investment opportunity. None of this explains what happened to Helen. Mental illness does not generally equal violence, and we don’t know if it played any role here. It is only the ‘bricked in Woolies’ (they don’t sell bricks at Woolies) and the apparent absence of motivation that makes me raise it. He knew Helen and she apparently had met him. She followed him on social media. She had taken the time to go out and meet with the Strathbogie group. She supported their cause. But something is wrong when we stop asking what happens to people we turn away and try to fit them into a ‘side’ so that we can more readily attack them. We are obsessed with dividing Australians into saints and bastards, left and right, OUR people and THEIR people. I have friends who vote LNP, friends in the Greens and Labor, a mate who works at Sky News. Because disability crosses all those boundaries. You’re a car accident, pregnancy or violent attack away from needing care yourself. Disability couldn’t give a shit which way they vote. Brendan Nugent belongs to this country too, whether any political faction wants him or not. That doesn’t excuse a single thing he’s accused of. Being Australian means belonging to all of us, including the people we find hardest to understand, or like.

It would be great if the American media could report that The Kennedy Center was operating with a SURPLUS of $40.7m in 2024 before Trump was re-elected. SURPLUS. And that what he says below according to the numbers I've seen just ANOTHER LIE.
Trump: the Kennedy Center "was losing hundreds of millions" before I got involved. Reality: $40.7M surplus in FY2024. Since he took over: $23M projected deficit. He's not saving the Kennedy Center. He's the reason it needs saving. And he wants "recognition" for it.

A huge difference one has had a surgical sex change whilst the other was assigned a female at birth. What we have is trans female athletes taking drugs to be fair & limit their ability, it's sort of the opposite of an athlete who takes (steroids) to be unfair. I transitioned from male to female in 2000 as a former male 🌍 champion athlete & I have experienced the changes in athletic ability firsthand. This a the review I coauthored, The Impact of Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy on Physical Performance. Conclusion: Limited evidence suggests that physical performance of nonathletic trans people who have undergone GAHT for at least 2 years approaches that of cis controls. Further controlled longitudinal research is needed in trans athletes & nonathletes. academic.oup.com/jcem/articl… In one study of national-level volleyball players, athletic trans women performed similarly to cis women (but below cis men) across multiple physical metrics. bjsm.bmj.com/content/59/15/1… In a UK study, athletic trans women (on hormones for 4–6 years) had worse performance in lung function, jump height, and relative VO₂ max (a measure of fitness) than cis women, but absolute grip strength was higher. bjsm.bmj.com/content/58/11/5… The most comprehensive synthesis to date, a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis (Sieczkowska et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine) of 52 studies and 6,485 participants, found that trans women on 1–3 years of GAHT had upper-body strength, lower-body strength and relative VO₂ max comparable to cis women, despite higher absolute lean mass. The authors concluded the evidence does not support theories of inherent athletic advantage for trans women over cis women. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4163… A 2025 longitudinal study (Harper et al., European Journal of Sport Science) tracked 9 trans women runners and 1 trans woman swimmer before and after starting GAHT. Race times slowed by around 15% in runners (with bigger decrements in longer-distance events) and around 5% in the swimmer. After adjusting for training volume, the runners’ age-graded performance scores did not differ pre- versus post-GAHT, meaning they were roughly as competitive in the women’s category as they had previously been in the men’s category. This is the first study to use both retrospective and prospective data on the same trans women athletes before and after GAHT. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article… A recent study found Trans women have bone density lower than natal males, natal females, & FtMs, as a group, BEFORE hormone therapy even begins (sample=711) asbmr.onlinelibrary.wiley.co… Arguments based on bone density derive from systematically racist arguments first introduced in the 1920’s while attempting to ignore this background, black women and women of color have higher bone density than white men (Leslie, 2012) removing bone density to be considered a factor for unfairness in trans athletes. Despite frequent public talk, there is no robust empirical evidence that trans women increase injury risk to cisgender women in sport. Most policies that cite safety are based on theoretical models (assuming trans women are the same as cis men, and comparing cis men to cis women), not on observed injury data. Many sporting bodies have eligibility policies. These often require: Maintaining testosterone levels below a threshold (e.g. < 5 nmol/L) for a set duration (e.g. 24 months). Submission of performance data (times, strength metrics, prior competition data). Hormone therapy leads to substantial physical changes in trans women, which often narrow or eliminate many performance differences over time. Any remaining differences are small and vary by sport. Some studies show a slight residual advantage in certain measures (e.g., handgrip strength) and a disadvantage in others (e.g., lung function and aerobic fitness). Fairness and inclusion can coexist. With thoughtful, evidence-based policies, both can be achieved without resorting to blanket bans. transresearch.org.au/post/tr…

This was a couple of months ago now, but it’s relevant to what is going on around social media, Pauline Hanson, misinformation, fake news, AI-produced content & overseas accounts that generate the majority of this rubbish. ‘Research from ABC News Verify & The Guardian confirms that many large, seemingly grassroots pro-One Nation Facebook groups operate as foreign-run "meme factories". These networks are managed by offshore administrators in Southeast Asia (such as Vietnam & the Philippines) & are designed to monetize Australian online engagement through ad revenue rather than legitimate political support’ The abc news have identified at least 20 foreign-run pages with many linked to admins based in Sri Lanka, Vietnam & The Philippines. These pages rely on high volumes of AI-generated content - deepfakes, bogus articles, fabricated stories about political figures to drive outrage and generate interest. The pages exist to game algorithms & direct traffic to external sites, which are profit driven. The same techniques are used via foreign Facebook accounts using an AI Pauline Hanson to manipulate Australian users. Posts involving Hanson are generally AI images with a small number of genuine pictures that depict Hanson in a positive & formative light in events that have never happened. Philanthropic roles in the community depict Hanson as a caring individual giving money away & helping people. Other “news stories” depict Hanson taking on other politicians - usually Anthony Albanese - painting the PM in a bad light. All the so-called news & events that are generated have never happened - but these events & imagery are being liked & shared throughout social media thousands of times by users who believe what they see without question & can’t see past the fake stories & imagery - these people aren’t prepared to research factual information that would negate this outside of the platform. Simple online searches would result in confirmation that these stories & events are not present in real life or in any news sources outside of the online platform source. While Pauline Hanson has primarily been depicted in a positive light - Albanese has been depicted in negative events, argumentative and duplicitous. None of these events are true. These fake news and events posts are used to engage users, encouraging emotive responses - and are more likely to induce anger and resentment. According to The Guardian Australia, pro One Nation facebook groups appear to be run by foreign meme factories that monetise content. ‘Guardian Australia examined 14 of the largest pro-One Nation public groups with at least 8,000 members, and found most were created this year. While some groups appear to be longstanding and set up by genuine supporters, the majority are full of content overwhelmingly fed by what digital media researcher Timothy Graham said appeared to be “a foreign-run, predominantly Indonesian, for-hire engagement farm operation” Much of the content across these groups is designed to be what Graham called outrage or “poll bait” – asking yes or no questions, such as “Was Pauline Hanson right to scold this journo?” or “Should Sharia law be banned in the Australia?” Other posts are reactive, with some of the accounts Guardian Australia tracked posting multiple times about the party’s “Fire the Liar” campaign. In at least one case, the text and image promoting the party’s fundraising drive was copied from a verified One Nation page’ So, pro Hanson content on social media driven by foreign players for positive pro-Hanson political content that is entirely fictitious…. I wonder who is driving this and how much of it is being paid for by Australian taxpayers? It would appear there is much to be gained for some but not others via online fake media stories, memes and AI. abc.net.au/news/2026-03-11/f…

The Sanewashing of Hanson Is at Its Peak. This is how Trump came to power: platform the lies, skip the follow-up, let the headlines call it “proving her critics wrong.” We are all watching it happen in real time. At the National Press Club, Pauline Hanson said the following. Not one claim was challenged by the so called journalists in attendance and she continues to be unchallenged on the facts in every interview she sits. -1. Unlike the Prime Minister, I welcome scrutiny.” Hypocritical. In the same speech she announced she refuses ABC interviews, will scrap the SBS, & will make the ABC subscription-only. The event allowed 2 hours; standard format gives 25–30 mins for the address. She spoke for 50-halving the time left for questions. When Guardian journalist Sarah Martin used that remaining time to ask about her daughter's $150,000 taxpayer-funded advisor role, Hanson called her “a trashy journalist” and banned her from all future press conferences. • “Babies are aborted the day before birth.” Fabricated. Late-term abortion is highly restricted, requires medical approval, and occurs only in genuine medical emergencies. • “Interest rates are heading towards 10%.” False. RBA cash rate: 4.35%. Forecast to fall, not rise. • “There’s no gender pay gap — just women taking time off.” False. WGEA confirms the gap exists at equal hours, equal roles, regardless of career breaks. • “$30B a year on Indigenous programs.” False. Only 18% (~$5.6B) is Indigenous-specific. The rest is the Indigenous share of mainstream services every Australian uses. • Transgender people were compared to “militant Islam.” False and dangerous. ABS data: transgender and gender-diverse Australians make up 1% of the pop’n. There’s no body of research showing transgender ppl commit crime at elevated rates-in fact it shows transgender people are dramatically more likely to be victims of violence— assault, sexual violence, and homicide rates against trans people are well above general population rates in most studies (US, UK, and Aust data all show this pattern) • “23% of Australians can’t speak English.” False. That 23% speak another language at home — most are bilingual. Limited English proficiency: just 3.2%. • “The CEFC has had $200 billion.” False by a factor of six. Actual legislated capacity: $33 billion. • “I care about the homeless and hungry.” Hypocritical. In the same speech, she backed cuts to Indigenous-specific funding — despite Aboriginal homelessness running up to 10 times higher than the non-Indigenous rate. • $90 billion in cuts, no plan. ~$35 billion of it remains unaccounted for. No modelling. • “I support worker rights.” False. Voted against minimum wage increases, penalty rates, criminalising wage theft, casual conversion rights, same job same pay, and the right to disconnect. Took a $100,000 pay rise while voting against a tax break for low-paid workers • Called Australian workers “lazy.” She has attended just 12% of Senate estimates since 2016 & 53% of parliamentary votes. Paid over $200k a year • Labor have let immigration get out of control.” False. Net overseas migration has fallen every year since the post-COVID peak in 2022-23 — 538,000 → 446,000 → 306,000 in 2024-25. She also recycled a 26-year-old ABS pop’n projection as a fresh “next 50 years” forecast Said: This beautiful country belongs to all Australians born here and those who have joined us”- in her opening line; then spent the next 50 minutes demanding a monocultural society, comparing transgender Australians to militant Islam, inflating migration and language figures, denying the gender pay gap, and repeating the debunked $30 billion Indigenous funding myth. Welcomed everyone in the first sentence. Spent the rest of the speech defining most of them out — and offered no plan to fix anything she raised, only $90 billion in cuts. Not one follow-up question. No source data on a single figure in the entire speech. This is what unchallenged looks like. /2 sources

It annoys me that so many people are under the impression that this guy, Steven Bradbury, is some subpar goober who lucked his way into gold. That could not be further from the truth. This is one of the most satisfying victories in the history of the Olympics if you know the full backstory. This medal final was during his fourth Olympics, in Salt Lake City in 2002. Earlier in his career, he was among the best athletes in the world in this specific event, the 1000 meter short-track men's speed skate. But despite his talent, he just had some of the shittiest luck in the sport. We're talking a decade of shit luck. In the '94 Winter Olympics, he was considered the odds-on favorite to take gold, but he fell in his heat after getting illegally pushed by an opponent (who was later disqualified). He didn't get a re-do. That was it. He got shoved by some asshole, and his Olympics was over. Then in the '98 Winter Olympics, he was a favorite to at least medal in the same event but got caught up in a collision that wasn't his fault and failed to advance. In 1994, he got his thigh sliced open by a competitor's skate during a race, which required 111 stitches and 18 months of recovery time. In 2000, he broke his neck during training because a skater in front of him fell and tripped him up. That required a bunch of screws and plates being inserted into his skull and back and chest. And doctors told him that he should stop skating. But he didn't wanna give up. It meant too much to him. So, there he was in Salt Lake City in 2002, past his prime, a walking erector set, going up against opponents who were faster and younger and in their prime. He manages to win his heat and advance to the quarterfinal but then has the shit luck (yet again) of having to go up against the best two athletes in the quarterfinal and only the top two advance. He finishes third and thinks: "Damn, I gave it my best shot." But then, the second place finisher is disqualified, so Bradbury gets to advance to the semifinal. Now, at this point, he's thinking: Well, shit, I'm not as fast as these younger guys, and I got a bad habit of getting taken out by crashes that aren't my fault. So, he consults with the Australian national coach, Ann Zhang, and they decide that he should hang back from the pack and hope the pack crashes. That is a perfectly valid strategy. If you crash, you lose, but speed skaters risk crashing to gain an advantage in order to win. It may not feel exciting, but it is a valid strategy and just as risky: avoid crashes entirely and hope that pays off. It paid off in the semifinal: the pack, including the defending Olympic champion, jostled too much and crashed. Bradbury wins and advances. So, he's improbably in the final and takes the same approach, and it works: the entire pack jostles too much and crashes, and Bradbury's risk of hanging back pays off. This victory was not some un-athletic schlub lucking his way into gold. It was a journeyman athlete who never gave up and played smart after a career of shitty luck and finally got his due after it being snatched away from him so many times. Hands down, one of my favorite Olympics stories.
"Dude there's no way you could ever win unless every single person in front of you crashed"
