The strongest argument I’ve ever heard in defence of patriarchy is the hot chapati. Someone has to keep making them while everyone else eats, and that someone is rarely the man demanding another.
But what happens when you draw a line between rice-eating and roti-eating India? The Census, economists and several decades of research start telling a rather curious story.
Introducing Rotinomics: where a humble flatbread finds itself accused of being an accessory to patriarchy.

Replying to @restofworld
@RestofWorld will publish its final stories at the end of January.
I’ve been sitting with this news for a few days, and I keep thinking about how personal this project was for me. When Sophie Schmidt asked me to help build Rest of World, it felt like a chance to fix something I’d been frustrated by for my whole career: seeing the parts of the world I come from covered as an afterthought.
I was there at the beginning, with a handful of hires and a bet that sounded obvious to us and strange to almost everyone else: that most of the world’s internet users live outside the West, and their stories deserved to be covered with the same depth, ambition, and care.
We didn’t want to cover “emerging markets.” We wanted to cover the people who were building, hacking, gig-working, organizing, and surviving through technology in countries like Nepal, where I grew up. We hired reporters who lived those stories rather than parachuted into them. We edited from the assumption that a delivery rider in Lagos was as important a protagonist as a CEO in San Francisco. The thousands of stories Rest of World published helped change how a lot of newsrooms think about who tech journalism is for.
Media ventures end for many reasons, and most of them are economic. That doesn’t change what Rest of World was able to prove: the audience was real, the journalism mattered, and the model of covering the world from the world actually works.
Thank you to Sophie for making the publication possible for all these years; to Christine Glancey, Michael Donohoe, Michael Zelenko, Itika Sharma Punit, Rina Chandran, Indranil Ghosh, and the team for carrying it this far; and to every reporter, editor, designer, and producer who passed through Rest of World and made it what it was. A special shout-out to Eli Berger, who’s been a rock for Rest of World since the beginning, navigating us through Covid-19, messy international hiring, legal threats, reporter safety, and a dozen other things.
The publication’s archive is a gift. I encourage everyone to read it.
And if you’re hiring, hire Rest of World’s journalists. You won’t find a better group of people.

Important:
Here’s something that a LOT of people don’t know about what’s actually going on with Delhi Police.
CJP’s Saurav Das & Ashutosh Ranka have been sent to 2 more days of judicial custody in Tihar Jail.
By a judicial court? NO.
They have been kept in Tihar Jail for the last 6 days on the order of a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM).
Who is an SEM? He is an ACP-rank (junior) police officer of Delhi Police appointed by the state govt.
Therefore, Delhi Police arrested Saurav & Ashutosh & now a Delhi Police ACP (acting as SEM) is keeping them in jail.
There’s no FIR against them. There’s also no judicial order.
Delhi Police are the accusers & well as the judge when it comes to keeping them in jail.
That’s how messed up it is.

People can have differences and nuanced takes on CJP but it is inexcusable to remain silent on the custody of Ashutosh and Saurav. This is an egregious violation of a citizen's liberty. Please speak up. If not on principle, than in self-interest, for this is setting a precedent.

What a real shame you are to this nation, @DelhiPolice!
Choking, scratching, and kicking female @NSUI student with heavy boots in broad daylight just because they dared to raise their voices against vote chori?
You hide behind uniforms and state power to inflict physical violence and grotesque humiliation on young women who pose no threat to anyone.
Day after day, your bosses preach hypocritical nonsense about women's safety, respect, and protection, yet the exact second those same women demand democratic rights and accountability, you unleash your inner animals upon them.
Dragging them by their hair, crushing them under heavy boots, and assaulting their bodily integrity exposes the absolute rot at the heart of this system. You really think a badge gives you a free pass to act like violent goon with absolute impunity?
Suspensions and internal inquiries are a complete joke.
Accountability isn't enough anymore every single officer involved in this cowardly assault needs to be fired and brought to justice .

Where is the media fraternity when some of their youngest, brightest on ground are getting arbitrarily detained?! Is there nothing more we can do on this kind of suppression of the institution besides releasing condemnation statements? This is unacceptable.

Hindu Raksha Dal's Pinki Chaudhary taking responsibility for the assault of young men and women in Delhi.
And this was not the only case.
Absolute shame on @DelhiPolice for letting right-wing goons roam free while detaining citizens and journalists left and right. Will Chaudhary be arrested now? Seems unlikely because he already has 30+ FIRs without a single conviction.

Don’t think it’s a new strategy, it was just more blatant. Right wing goons were very much present in the July protest too. What’s different is the blatant impunity on display from the cops.
We saw a new strategy this time: the use of right-wing goons.
I spoke to one of the most violent goons: Devendra Pal from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. He was frank about using violence.
“If these bloody cockroaches want to divide India then they will be beaten in this way."
