Melva Cornell in a publicity photo taken almost a century ago - for the only film she ever appeared with a credit - Fox's "Movietone Follies of 1929". The film is now lost, destroyed in the infamous vault fire of 1937. Despite her stunning red-headed beauty, Cornell never made it in films, and instead worked behind the scenes. Her life had great sadness with her beloved husband dying young in 1941, followed 4 years later by her only child dying of leukemia at the age of 6. Melva remained single for the rest of her life and died in 1960 at age 55. This photo was inscribed to her fellow red-headed friend Myrna Loy

“Ivan’s Childhood.” Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. 1962.
His first feature film. Based on a story by Vladimir Bogomolov. The war through the eyes of a boy scout. Ivan has no childhood left. It only comes back to him in dreams.
In the frame is a birch grove. Captain Kholin and the nurse Masha. Kholin was played by Valentin Zubkov. Masha was played by Valentina Malyavina. She was 20 then. She was a first-year student at the Moscow Art Theatre School. The scene was shot in a grove outside Moscow, and it was not an easy shot.
The film won the Golden Lion in Venice in 1962. For Tarkovsky it was the start of a world name.
