There’s something special about being part of something bigger than yourself. Something that asks you to put aside your own interests, commit to something greater, and understand that the journey was never just about you.
In today’s day and age, that seems to be getting harder to find and even harder to embrace.
The players, coaches, and parents who do it best eventually look back and realize that the greatest part of the experience wasn’t always the wins, the recognition, or the individual accomplishments. It was the journey.
It was the relationships built, the adversity overcome, the lessons learned, and the memories made along the way. It was learning to put the team first, sacrifice for one another, and understand that you were part of something bigger than yourself.
The real reward of team athletics isn’t just what you accomplish together. It’s who you become along the way and the people who share that journey with you.
One day, you’ll look back and realize just how special it was to be part of something bigger than yourself.

If I were starting a team tomorrow, these would be 5 non-negotiables:
1. Be on time.
2. Communicate.
3. Compete.
4. Be coachable.
5. Be a great teammate.
Simple standards. Repeated daily.

High School Baseball Players:
As fall ball wraps up, offseason workouts are about to begin for many high school programs.
Friendly reminder:
Make your high school team's offseason workouts a priority.
I understand every situation is different, and there are a lot of great private hitting and pitching instructors out there who do an incredible job helping players develop.
I'm a believer in getting extra work outside of your high school program.
The more quality reps you can get, the better.
But I also think it's important to remember that your high school workouts matter. Being there, putting in the work, and showing your commitment to your teammates and coaches goes a long way.
Ideally, your high school workouts and private instruction should complement each other, not compete with each other.
At the end of the day, your high school coach is the one making out the lineup.
Just something to keep in mind as offseason workouts get started.

In my opinion, if your school bus has the only 3 kids who’s parents didn’t come to the game/meet on the return trip home… you have a culture problem.
Ride the bus home with your team.
Laugh with your friends and enjoy the time together, win or lose.
Help coaches put equipment away.
Say good bye and thank you.

Parents, your son's head coach gets calls from college coaches during the season
When that call comes, the college coach is not asking about stats
He is asking what kind of kid your son is. How he handles adversity. Whether the team respects him. If he shows up every day or just on game nights.
That phone call can open a door or close one

One of the coolest things about Cleveland is most of us in Cleveland were born here. It's not like that in a ton of cities that have 3 major sports franchises. It runs deep here. Sports are our lifeblood. We're born into it.

I just got off the phone with the mother of a 2027 player. Zero offers. She told me her son is a D1 player.
I told her the truth.
Power 4 and Power 5 D1 programs want older, more physically mature players. That is not an opinion. That is how college baseball works in 2026.
I told her his path may need to start at a D3 program.
She was insulted.
So I explained something that most families do not understand. D3 is not little league.
Because of roster reductions, NIL, and the transfer portal — genuinely elite players are now choosing D3 programs to develop, get playing time, build a college baseball resume, and transfer to a Power 4 or Power 5 program. Some of them are getting paid to do it.
That is not a consolation prize. That is a strategy. And it is the most realistic path for a 2027 player with D1 ability who is not yet physically where Power 4 coaches need him to be.
She hung up on me.
I have been doing this for 28 years. I will tell you the truth even when you do not want to hear it.
The parents who listen are the ones whose sons play college baseball.
The parents who hang up find out in March there is nothing left.

I let them know the scratch was small enough, and my car old enough, that I wasn't concerned about it, but I appreciated the offer. Nice to know there are still honest people around willing to accept responsibility for their actions. 2/2

As an Athletic Director, I believe we live in an era where too many high school athletes are chasing the scholarship instead of embracing the grind, development, and process that will make them better.
We also live in an era of the transfer portal, where opportunities for high school athletes are becoming more limited.
My advice to every athlete who wants to play at the next level is simple:
Focus on what you can control.
Control your effort.
Control your attitude.
Control your development.
Control how you respond to adversity.
Control how you show up for your team every day.
Don’t let the pursuit of a scholarship take away from the experience of becoming the best version of yourself.
If you commit to the process, embrace the grind, and become the best player and person you can be, you will have no regrets.
The scholarship should be a byproduct of your development, not the sole purpose of your journey.
Trust the process. Earn your opportunities. Become the best version of yourself.

A concession to parents from the coaches' side that I want to amplify, because Brad Bass is right: if you tell your team practice ends at five o'clock, it needs to end at five o'clock, mom and dad are the ones sitting out in the car. Accountability runs in both directions. Coaches who demand punctuality owe it back.

Average players goof around until it's their turn at practice.
Better players watch whoever goes before them.
Good players notice what the player did right or wrong.
Great players LEARN when the coach corrects someone else... so they don't waste a rep making the same mistake.

Player told me they want to find a college where they can stay for 4–5 years. They want to build a relationship with the school and coaches, get a degree & enjoy their college experience—not worry about leaving after 1 year or jumping into the portal.
Refreshing to hear & rare!

Every year on or right before 9/11, we show this video to our students. It’s not only powerful story-telling, it’s a reminder to a younger generation about how life altering 9/11 was for those of us who lived it. It’s only 10 min #themanintheredbandana
