A reminder that the Trump administration canceled a contract for an mRNA H5N1 vaccine in favor of pursuing an older technology that is not likely to work. Explanatory articles from the late, missed Helen Branswell: statnews.com/2025/08/11/mrna… and statnews.com/2025/05/03/nih-…
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now.
A dangerous and preventable situation.
Let me explain.

Not sure anything is being missed, the OP is romanticizing they type of gloom and emptyness that a real future america of 100 million would have.

Why does every DC policy somehow go out of its way to prioritize lawbreaking/not paying what you owe at the expense of people trying to do the right thing? Does literally anyone in DC govt understand incentives?

Like many in tax world, I’ve been dismayed at how bipartisan the tax revolt has become. Exempting more people and income from taxes. How do we combat these bad ideas? Fund the tax police again to restore credibility. My guest piece for @SearchlightInst. open.substack.com/pub/search…

One of the great innovations of Twitter was that you could just talk to journos and political pundits.
Before Twitter you might have suspected they were retarded or captured but you couldn’t PROVE it.
With Twitter you could ask them questions that proved exactly what they were.

Anyway, this is a fucked up use of public resources and I am confident it will fail, because no one with so little character as to bring these charges is competent enough to prevail in them.
What I'm really curious about is if there's a grifty non-profit involved?

A lot of cities and some states are sleepwalking into fiscal crises due to willful progressive blindness toward second order thinking

If we make the datacenters foot every cent of their marginal connection requirements should we be surprised that in turn they choose to build de minimus transmission so that their marginal generation becomes a natty ct or recrip?
If you want grid connection and this is more expensive than the other option might need to share some costs on that.

I’m more than happy to contribute to our beautiful city, but expanding new programs while basic government functions decay is poor governance. We are not an endless pot of money to give away.

Anyway in literature, the only acceptable amount of AI writing is 0%, so I’m very comfortable with significant sanctions on those who repeatedly make it to 100.

This is so emblematic of the Council's failure to consider second order effects. They want to give renters not one, but two, chances to get two months of rent covered by the city and their landlord?
Superior Court just needs to end Zoom court. Why is this so hard?
Replying to @JHWeissmann
The only limits I can find are that 1) the landlord has to sign their building up for the program 2) tenants can only get that 2/3 rent discount twice.
So in theory, if a landlord signs up for this, it looks like tenants have an incentive to try and get four free months of rent.

An NYPD officer shot and killed a man in Brooklyn, so @BrooklynDA Eric Gonzalez’s office filed charges – not against the officer who killed someone but against two activists who posted flyers criticizing the officer.

Of all the issues facing DC, so much effort and political capital is wasted arguing to eliminate foie gras. Though I suppose it’s better spent on this than the constant advocacy many in this city do for violent criminals
