It’s barely been one day of ao3 down and some of yall are already starting ridiculous discourse. Ppl downloading + sharing fics when the site is down is such a lovely example of community and is functioning exactly as ao3 intended: preserving access to fics.

Another way to get reactions and feedback on your work or parts of it is posting excerpts/snippets. It's perfectly normal to want that instantly rewarding dopamine shot right after a tedious writing session but perhaps you're waiting for it in an underoptimized environment for it

Engagement can be incredibly shallow. You can stat like crazy on your works and still never have a single satisfying interpersonal or substantial interaction. A fandom that would be only about "engagement' isn't really communicating, isn't really thriving.
nuclear hot take regarding current discourse.
it’s okay to want feedback, but if you genuinely see people sharing their personal archive during ao3 outage as “stolen engagement” you have your priorities skewed and i do not trust you to not use ai as a shortcut for “engagement”

People acting like many "readers" aren't writers themselves, and as if their opinion was mere consumer arrogance and not an expression of a philosophy they extend to their own works as well.
I’m absolutely pro-commenting/kudosing/subscribing/bookmarking fics. I’m happy to provide a writer with a dopamine hit, I know it feels nice. But I resent some of y’all demanding it as recompense. You just aren’t that special to me.

this new age fic writer transactional mentality is getting to the point where i think they'd want ao3 to have ads if it meant they could get a cut of the revenue from ads placed in their fics and then talk about how their labour for the community can finally be fairly compensated
.@protomolecute demanding that people provide praising comments and then blocking any critical replies? Definitely seems like you want to be in community and hate pure transactional consumer relationships

this ao3 discourse has only confirmed to me that writers now see themselves as the main event when in reality the STORY is the main event. we are a vessel that delivers the ideas through words that could not be contained. everything else is ego and holds zero appeal

despite all its issues, Wikipedia is one of the single greatest inventions in human history. there have been countless Libraries of Alexandria but this is likely the most comprehensive collection of human knowledge to ever exist and it’s available on a handheld in 350 languages
Reading/looking at fanwork and actively participating in the fandom community are two whole different things. You can build the latter off of the former, but you cannot mandate that those who like to do the former must join the latter.
i think people have gotten so accustomed to treating ao3 as just another content-hosting site to build an audience around that they've completely lost sight of what it stands for and the archival philosophy behind it

“but I won’t get comments or kudos if they share privately” im gonna hold your hand when i say this: when you post on the internet, you aren’t entitled to these things. try writing to appease the voices in your head instead & you will find peace

mr. and mrs. bennet discourse back on my feed… I must put in my two cents and say that austen very clearly thinks BOTH of them fail their family in significant ways. their first failure is in the act of marriage itself, because neither of them respects the other… (cont.)

Referring to kudos, bookmarks and comments as the currency of fandom is so interesting to me. You're not being paid - in any form.
Capitalism has rotten your brains. You are being appreciated and complimented. Those are NOT payments for your labour.
Your work is not a product.
kinda crazy how many people who dont live in dc are calling people overdramatic for caring they werent given proper notice of a plane flyover as if many people didnt live through 9/11 and 67 people werent killed in a plane crash last year within view of my window

also, the remedy to this feeling of exploitation on the part of authors is to cultivate a fandom community environment where the primary medium of engagement w/ fanworks is not ao3 comments! friends/beta readers reacting, circulating drafts or excerpts on social media, etc
Replying to @employedmeg
ofc i understand where you and other creators are coming from, because that's the logic of social media platforms that function on an attention/influence based economy. but if ao3 is an archive, as it says it is, then you have to respect those norms.
