Nail on the head...NRIs want to invest but Kyc at entry and Tax procedures when withdrawing are killing inflows @FinMinIndia @PMOIndia
There are so many issues with NRI investments which have reduced their investments in India. For example- a fund cannot have more than 50 pct collective NRI money. Why- no one knows.
An individual NRI cannot own more than 25 pct of a fund- Why- no one knows.
This applies to even OCIs ( who are foreign citizens) but not to foreign citizens who don't have OCI: why- no one knows.
General explanation is that Indians will do round tripping through NRIs/OCIs. Why will they do round tripping- no one knows. There is no difference in taxes whether u are India based or FII.
Even if there is no real financial logic to do round tripping but some Indian resident wants to round tripping - Why Indian will do round tripping only through NRIs/OCIs and not foreign citizens- no one knows.
And at the end of it- if some very small number of residents do have foreign money outside and they want to invest it back in India why stop them- no one knows. Also if a small percentage are doing something which authorities do not approve, why stop the route for a much much much much larger genuine population- no one knows.

LRS going to zero is not good at all. Even if it's a rumour or a test balloon, it's not a good signal to send. Not sure if all biz channels are going with that story, I only saw Zee Biz so far. Good time for RBI to clarify since RBI has been named.

Manipur is such a beautiful state, blessed with everything beautiful. Being born in Manipur, I have seen this land deeply. I know how beautiful Manipur is, some places here you won't find anywhere else in the world.
But today, everyone is scared to visit. Everyone has a fear of Manipur. Forget about outsiders, even the people of Manipur themselves are afraid to travel from one place to another within their own home state.
What have we done to Manipur? As a citizen, I have the right to ask. The Northeast needs attention before we feel swept away from India.

Side effect of the new LRS scheme is going to shaft a lot of the salaried class again (The class that gets shafted every time).
Shut out of employer ESPP schemes. May even impact RSUs.
Employees will likely resort to not selling their RSUs and bringing money in.

If the LRS restrictions are truly applied, it's a regressive step, shows lack of confidence in our own growth story and ability or the economy.
Consider the implications of the proposed LRS restrictions.
An NRI may be able to repatriate up to USD 1 million annually from eligible NRO balances, subject to conditions. Under the proposed framework being discussed, a resident Indian could face a ₹50 lakh ceiling for current-account remittances and no automatic-route facility for capital-account remittances.
If NRIs were also granted more favourable long-term capital gains treatment, the disparity in financial flexibility could widen further.
An Indian taxi driver in the UAE could enjoy greater freedom to move eligible wealth across borders than a doctor or engineer earning, saving and paying taxes in India.
But the economic consequences extend beyond fairness.
Restrict residents’ ability to build and diversify wealth, and you risk making households more cautious about spending on homes, cars, travel, education and other goods and services. Weaker consumption can weigh on business revenues, investment and employment.
Capital controls may seek to conserve foreign exchange. But if they also discourage wealth creation and weaken household confidence, the wider economic trade-offs deserve serious scrutiny.
Also forcing Indians to confine their capital to domestic markets will only inflate Indian real estate beyond the reach of the common man and create exit liquidity for FIIs in the equity market.
You cannot squeeze the avenues for wealth creation, constrain financial mobility and expect domestic consumption to keep powering growth indefinitely. That is how a policy intended to protect the economy risks becoming a race to the bottom.

We are truly a banana republic now.
Going forward, you won’t be allowed to buy U.S stocks directly from India.
- RBI has proposed to abolish the LRS limit for Capital Account transfers, i.e from $250,000 to $0 under automatic route.
- Basically, this will kill the model of foreign investing or the ability to invest outside India.

What utter rubbish is this - I hope this is fake news of the type being circulated that RBI suggested LTCG cuts (even a policy novice would know, RBI has nothing to do with tax policy).
But one cannot put anything past this entity. A few days ago it slapped and bullied small forex earners with the horrendous new EDF paperwork - and now it is proposing curbs on foreign expenditure to preserve forex!
How about reducing frictions and enabling more small businesses to earn forex, @RBI? Or are you only capable of one retarded act after another?
Explained: RBI proposes Rs 50 lakh sub-limit under LRS to curb dollar outflows; business travel, pilgrimages included zeebiz.com/economy-infra/new…

I disagree with this whole thesis. Nifty is down 4.4% since Jan 1st 2025. That is hardly catastrophic when you consider that Nifty returned a 14.25% CAGR in the preceding 6 years. How much did the current market darlings return in that period?
To claim that a 4.4% DD over 1.75 years has destroyed careers and track records is borderline delusional. If you can't suck up a couple of years of sideways movement, buy some FDs.
If STT were made zero tonight, it wouldn't move the needle for *any* investor. The govt would just have less revenue. Taiwan has higher STT than India and has zero capital gains all this while. It has almost identical returns in 2020-24.
