I actually supported Stevens over AES. But her real infraction isn't changing her mind. It's that she made promises & broke them. It's *highly unlikely* that in the mere hours between the promises & the betrayal that she genuinely changed her mind. Which means she's just a liar.

I can’t believe we’re two months away from 2027 and the easiest way to save something as a PDF is still to lie to your computer and tell it you’re about to print it.

7 am EST Nov 2: An area of low pressure is likely to form along a weakening frontal boundary a few hundred miles northeast of the Bahamas in a couple of days. This system could acquire some subtropical characteristics late this week while it drifts over the western Atlantic. Visit hurricanes.gov for updates.

I said (at length, in a book), Trump's base is full of people who are bored, resentful, angry about the outcome of their own lives. They were happy to punish others for that - until they realized Trump hates *them*, too. They didn't see it until gas got expensive, but... okay 🤷‍♂️

The pro-Gaza case is just nonsense. It almost literally just boils down to: "Israel should not have fought the war Hamas started, because people died."
If Israel was “bombing Gaza indiscriminately”, why did those indiscriminate bombs kill under 2% of women, 6% of men, but “discriminate” against 100% of these generals? Could it be the IDF was, in fact, as discriminating as it’s possible to be in an urban warzone? Generalocide.

Men are attracted to fertility & that's ok 🤷‍♀️ That doesn't mean older women can't be attractive! Volunteering in a nursing home was an exercise in watching adorable old people date each other 😜 But shaming men for being attracted to young women is as dumb as shaming women for what we're attracted to 🤷‍♀️

Here’s one of the most fascinating child development videos I’ve ever shared. As your baby learns language, they begin by approximating the examples you set. After a period of early experimentation with sound (including cries, coos and gurgles), infants begin babbling - making speech-like sounds (which often include components of conventional speech) that are - nonetheless - not yet conventionally meaningful. This babbling phase is a precursor to the use of formal words. And it happens in all languages. Including sign language. This video shows an infant (who, by the way, is not hearing impaired) “babbling” to her deaf grandparents. As they sign to her, she responds in kind, using her hands to approximate the signed communication that they are modeling. It’s a whole serve and return conversation, just as if they were conversing verbally. If you’ll watch carefully, you’ll note distinct turn taking. And - interestingly - that with her grandparents she largely avoids vocalizations, in favor of gesture. What a treat to see this rich example of bilingual language development. This fascinating video was shared to TT by mara_mccullough.

Patrick Stewart's stories from DUNE are pretty great. There's a whole thing about how David Lynch was disappointed when he showed up because ... well, I won't spoil it. And then this, on his first conversation with Sting, is quite funny:
Patrick Stewart was amazing, a bygone sort of actor with working-class ethics and classical aesthetics. One of the most generally beloved men in Hollywood. Could play a nasty villain! Great actor, he will be missed. thebulwark.com/p/patrick-ste…

Never get romantic advice from anyone who says “cracking a girl” or refers to “body counts.” Women (and men) are real people with thoughts and feelings, just like you! Treat them that way!
After cracking a girl Low body count girl: “That was so nice, I really enjoyed it. When next am I seeing you again I’m going to miss you” High body count girl:

Timothy Treadwell. One of the things that makes Werner Herzog an actually respectable documentarian is that he had access to the Treadwell death tape and didn't play it in his documentary I'm writing an article on how fucked up the True Crime industry is and I saw a documentary on Peacock where they showed video of a topless woman tied to a bed by a serial killer who subsequently raped and murdered her. I wasn't looking for the most evil True Crime documentaries I could find - I was just randomly watching True Crime documentaries available for free on streaming networks to get a general idea of what the industry is like and got treated to a 3-part documentary on peacock where they show video taken by the serial killers that contains the uncensored faces of women who were raped and dismembered within 15 minutes of the footage they published Thanks NBC! That's definitely something that needs to be widely available to the general public!

No kidding. Some things should never be heard. Same impulse that had people insisting they wanted to hear the audio of that one guy & his girlfriend who got killed by a bear in Alaska. I forget the name but like, y'know.

I mean, this is a point to consider, right? In the earlier SA, the downtowns of major cities looked fine and the country had sun-bombs. But, per a famous 1977 study, only 14.8% of black households, "tens of percents" of Coloreds and Asians, and maaaaybe 70% of white Boers had electricity at all. Does anyone claim general metrics like this have gotten worse OVERALL, outside of pure Red rule, even in the goofiest modern societies? Real question.
First world is when 10% of the apartheid country has electricity

It's worse than that. It causes a ridiculous sense of entitlement. True crime fans get mad when stuff like the Patrick Clancy call of him walking in on his dead children doesn't get made public How much of a ghoul can you be?
Aside from the fact it rots people's brains, honestly True Crime is really just quite unethical conceptually. Like I used to watch it and at a certain point I just sat down and went. Why am I listening to the worst things that can happen to a person being recounted?

Agree and disagree. Australia and the US derive from common roots & have similar factors shaping them, so some of what looks like aping America is merely understandable similarity. HOWEVER… Globalised media & changing demographics are turning the Australia into a more generic multicultural Anglosphere country, which is more open to external cultural influences… and the US is the world’s no. 1 exporter of culture. Its influence is everywhere, but especially in Anglosphere countries, and in young ones like Canada & Australia most. Step back a generation or two & you’ll see a more Australian Australia & a more British Australia. Your results may vary as to how good or bad this shift is overall - one might argue we are more sophisticated & inclusive now - but it’s bad from the perspective of maintaining a distinctly Australian culture. An important factor here I think is also Australia’s relative lack of jingoism. Australians do have pride in their nation & culture but in the cosmopolitan middle class it’s seen as a bit cringe & crass. Not a phenomenon unique to Australia, but one more likely to diminish some overtly Australian aspects of our culture. Traditional “Aussie”-ness is obviously more highly valued among white Anglos with deeper roots here, but also among the working class and particularly rural Australians. Personally, as a person of partial Asian descent I’ve never fully identified with the Aussie identity, partly because as a youngster I didn’t feel it included me in it. I’m the epitome of the shift towards cosmopolitan global culture. But I can’t help but feel greater appreciation for many aspects of traditional Australian culture with the passing of time, and wonder what good things we be lost to us along with the bad.
Australia is the only country I’ve ever gone to outside of the U.S. and I’ve spent much of this year there and what I will say is that the biggest culture shock for me was and what still astounds me day in and day out in that country is how completely dominated they are by American culture and American identity as such. It is beyond anything I could have ever imagined. They don’t have a national identity anymore. It doesn’t exist. Not at scale at least. I think BAP has talked about this broadly more recently, but every cultural pillar and outlet of theirs is just overwhelmingly imported US culture. It goes so deep it leaves me without words to explain it. My jaw has been dropped since I first stepped foot on the soil and I have never been able to pick it up since. And to see that they are actively hostile towards me for being a non self-flagellating American is even more insane because they are fish in water with America and American identity through in through in all but name. How they don’t see the absurdity and irony in it all is beyond me, but I clearly underestimated America’s totalizing and undisputed power before I left it for the first time.

i've occasionally found myself in conservative spaces where the men are really hostile to me, like 'don't be trying to seduce us' and im just like ????? what the fuck are you smoking. your bodycount is 2 mine is 500 if we fucked it would be like a hobbit vs gandalf
Slutty women marry slutty men and they're both content. Women with a bodycount of 200 aren't lurking in the bushes to ensnare virgin men.

Magical thinking, exhibit A. Nothing wrong with focusing on prevention but no matter how utopian the world becomes, there will still be people who will commit all sorts of horrible crimes, just because.
Mark Guiducci: “Do you believe that someone who is convicted of murder with intent should be physically confined to protect the public?” Darializa Avila Chevalier: “But that is what happens in the day-to-day.” This is Fair Game, where no subject is off the table.
