So let me get this straight - former Deputy Mayor Jake Pawlak's idea (that he's routing through Councilperson Warwick) for how to get us out of the budget hole that he created is to levy a tax that's not legal and will go through years of expensive litigation.
A good idea, but under PA Law, municipalities (other than Philadelphia) may only tax “Earned Income” (wages). The city went on a spending spree, now it must make the necessary cuts to get expenditures in line with revenue. triblive.com/local/new-tax-o…

>looking for a new moral framework
>ask the rationalist if their framework is moral reasoning or pascal’s wager
>he doesn’t understand
>pull out illustrated diagram explaining what is moral reasoning and what is pascal’s wager
>he laughs and says “it’s a good moral framework sir”
>adopt the framework
>it’s pascal’s wager

This is a great example of how EA fails.
Even working within the universalist utilitarian premise: the author calculates that there are 75 hours (270,000 seconds) of insect death per second of human life. But human brains are 1 million to 20 million times larger than insect brains. How does suffering potential/intensity scale with brain size? We have no idea! It could be linear, log, exponential, or something else entirely. It could be based on specific neural structures, it could be about brain mass relative to body mass. We just have absolutely no clue.
I imagine the response would be “fine I’ll just vibe a probability distribution over all of these” but that’s just as unknown as the questions themselves, and when numbers are this big, small parameter tweaks will cause huge swings in the final result.
Furthermore, what does “matter” mean in this context? We don’t really have a way to meaningfully address insect suffering.
Of course there are also far more foundational critiques: morality as a social technology rather than a cosmic fact, the greater potential of humans to spread life throughout the universe, etc etc.
Tldr this is both fake and useless. Fake in that, despite some superficial math, it’s really just laundered vibes, and useless in that we couldn’t do anything about it anyway.
I think the psychology that drives this is a glee in being counterintuitive. If his own calculation had instead showed that humans housed more utils, I think he would have felt disappointed and bored, and probably not published it. A reflexive preference for the unintuitive is no more rigorous than intuition, and based on an evolutionary argument is probably wrong *more* often, or at least less fit.
This “glee in being counterintuitive” is a ubiquitous pathology among EAs. It makes them feel smart, feel like high decouplers. They allocate esteem based on how many weird beliefs/practices someone will espouse, since that indicates rational elevation above our “base” cognitive nature.

Fil-C intentionally and disingenously conflates Rust's meaning of memory safety (compile time static analysis leading to runtime robustness) with its meaning (GC and runtime safe crash).
Not comparable, the latter you get in many GC langs. Fil-C's innovation is that it can make old C software less radioactive without requiring extensive patching or rewrites.
If “Memory Safety” was truly the ultimate goal, Rust would not be the ideal solution.
Fil-c, for example, does a far more effective job of bringing “Memory Safety” to existing, massive code bases.
That is one of the (several) indicators that Rust activists have an ulterior motive (that has nothing to do with “Memory Safety”).

Virgin “gamedev”: lectures everyone how to write software. Ships Order of the Sinking Star, a dated Unity-slop-looking single-player puzzle game with horrible controls and maybe 10 interactive objects at any time.
Chad “enterprise developers”: ship Factorio, a genre-defining cross-platform engineering miracle with tens of thousands of interacting entities across five planets, multiplayer that can handle dozens of players in one session, and iconic visuals.
Also got to 1.0 faster.

SUPERGIRL & Krypto✨🐕
I'm really looking forward to SUPERGIRL.
Krypto was hard to draw, and I had to redraw him three times.
Getting the fluffy feel of the fur is difficult.

I don't give as many takes about programming languages anymore.
Not because I no longer have opinions - I very much do. But because the best tool in the world won't save you if you're doing two week sprints.

The dudes who thought this a reasonable portrayal of the Achaemenid Persians are now crying foul at the accuracy of the Nolan's Odyssey.
It’s because the formerly cool website where everyone used to spend their time telling jokes and bullshitting about movies got purchased by a human sinkhole then turned into a machine that hands out nickels to the dumbest people on earth whenever they issue the wettest fart

Shouldn’t Russia be likewise obliged to have Urkainian-style Presidental election as well -- with international observers, no political prisoners, freedom of the press, tv and the Internet and independent candidates not controlled by the Kremlin?

We talk a lot about how American Jews don't understand Israel but I'm here to argue that Israelis would benefit just as much from learning about us. 70% of American Jews are going to vote for Harris. They should be more curious as to what we know that they don't.
Israel’s @newsisrael13 poll of Israelis:
63% prefer Trump to be elected president next month.
20% want to see a Harris victory.
