The NFL needs to rethink how suspensions are handled. Don’t announce until after an appeal hearing.
People jumped to conclusions and assumed Franklin was guilty.
Statement from Bills DB Sam Franklin Jr.’s agents, Harold C. Lewis and Christian Addison, after appeals officer James Thrash reduced Franklin’s one-game suspension to a $14,926 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct:
“As we said from the start, Sam did not and would never spit at an opponent, and there was no evidence that he did. We're glad the suspension was overturned and grateful to the hearing officer for a fair and thorough review. It's unfortunate the league suspended Sam in the first place based on an unsupported accusation that received so much undeserved attention, and we hope the outcome is covered just as widely. We also hope the league takes a serious look at the opposing player's conduct, including striking Sam in the groin twice during the game. We're glad this is behind him, so Sam can get back to focusing on his teammates and next Sunday.”

For about 48 hours Sam Franklin was not only accused, but judged to be a guy who spit at an opponent, even though he didn’t. And because of that, his name will always be linked to doing that, and many won’t see (or care) that he didn’t. That sucks.

“I’ll tell you another true story… New England vs. [Ryan] Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills. Fred Jackson was the running back… My job was to stop the running back. I done ran Marshawn Lynch up out of Buffalo… Anyway, Fred Jackson was having a great year. I think they had a backup running back, [Tashard] Choice… He was like on their sideline… I done hit Fitzpatrick. Knocked his helmet off. Personal foul, you already know. I smoked his ass, helmet came off. Dropped 250 [pounds] on his ass…
They said ‘F**k you, Spikes! You dirty as hell!’ I said, ‘Just for that, I’m gonna put ya man to sleep! I’m gonna knock his ass out if you keep talking!’ [Then a] TV timeout, I’m over there, ‘Watch mothaf***a I’m gonna kill his ass! I’m gonna put him to sleep! Fred, this his fault! This ya boy fault!
