This is Zimbabwe’s Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, at the scene of Friday’s accident, which killed 27 people in Zimbabwe on the Harare to South Africa highway.
I have the utmost respect for the culture, traditions and customs of any society. But appealing to our ancestors to solve problems that require human intervention is foolish. Cultural observance cannot substitute for practical action and accountability.
Police say the truck was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with the minibus. This demands a serious conversation about dangerous driving, road design and the enforcement of safety rules.
A two-lane road, with one lane in each direction, should not be the limit of our ambition for a major international highway linking Zimbabwe and South Africa. Zimbabwe needs properly engineered dual carriageways, with central crash barriers separating opposing traffic.
These barriers help prevent vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic and can significantly reduce such collisions. Federal Highway Administration
Alongside those improvements, we need proper vehicle inspections and strict enforcement against overloading, speeding and dangerous overtaking. Drivers, transport operators and public officials must all take responsibility.
We cannot expect our ancestors or God to compensate for our refusal to address preventable dangers. No ritual will widen a road, install a crash barrier or make an overloaded vehicle safe. Those things require planning, investment, enforcement and competent leadership.
The further tragedy is that our black children are growing up believing that only things managed by white people work because they repeatedly see us failing to manage even the basics, including maintaining and expanding infrastructure we inherited in 1980.
That would be a false and damaging lesson. Competence has no race. But we must demonstrate that through the quality of our leadership, our institutions and the services we deliver.
Our children should grow up seeing that we can build, maintain and manage a country that works. They deserve more than explanations for failure, and bereaved families deserve more than condolences after every disaster.
Respect our ancestors, certainly. But honour the dead by taking responsibility for protecting the living. Asking them to protect us when we can do it ourselves is the greatest sign of disrespect to our ancestors!

None of these people will talk about government's complicity in the death of 92+ people in Kariba. They can't criticize the devil that fed them!

The Kariba Boat Disaster represents a man made public policy tragedy of epic proportions. Heads must certainly roll! I am also appalled by the central government response. USD100 per family as government assistance to the victims of Kariba Boat Disaster!!!! The gods must be crazy! My heart is sore💔 And where are the so called ‘philanthropists’ who dish out cars and cash like confetti at a wedding? Why not donate to these people who are in need?

Why is it so difficult to count votes when counting an equivalent amount in money is done so efficiently, in minutes .
I watched one million dollars( $1m )being counted in some two churches recently - very fast and in record time !
But Politicians will take days , sometimes weeks to count anything under 10 million ballots and account for them !

🔸Given the current climate, bringing in South African artists to perform in Zimbabwe would be a gross failure to read the room. Our brothers, sisters, relatives and friends are squatting in the rain, choked by fear and in danger of losing their livelihoods.
Now, more than ever, they need our solidarity. Let’s spare a thought for those who are victims of another round of suffering, having fled poverty, hunger and @ZANUPF_Official’s general reign of terror.
Let’s do the right thing.🙏🏽
We need new leaders.🇿🇼

Emmanuel Sitima @EmmanuelSitima7 and Takunda Mhuka now have over a month in jail as political prisoners of conscience, just like Madzibaba Veshanduko (Godfrey Karembera) @BitiTendai and Morgan Ncube - No trial, no conviction - just persecution by prosecution over flimsy unsubstantiated politically allegations.
They are being targeted by @edmnangagwa’s @ZANUPF_Official for saying NO TO CAB3.
We @cdfzim continue demanding their immediate and unconditional release.

#BREAKING The government RAISES fuel prices again. Litre of diesel now $2.11 up from $2.05. Petrol now $2.23, up from $2.17. Energy regulator ZERA says diesel would have gone up to $2.65 if government had not scrapped taxes. ZERA adds petrol price to go down during next review

The Zanu PF government & parliament has effectively alienated the entire diaspora constituency in its constitution consultative process. No sessions have been organized for us, and we firmly believe that decisions impacting us should not be made without our input. Nothing for US without US! In response, we will conduct our own citizen consultations and submit the outcomes. It's clear they are afraid of us.
