The most important feature of liberal democracy is a formal system of checks and counter-powers to ensure a balance between the power of the government and the liberty of its citizens. You should have things like:
- The rule of law above all
- An elected congress / senate in charge of passing laws
- Courts supervising enforcement
- Free speech and press freedom
That's the kind of system I want to live in and that I want to see around the world. I know some people believe they benefit from autocracy when it's "their" autocrat in charge. But I don't think anyone benefits from autocracy except the inner circle of the autocrat.
The rule of law is vital for business. It's vital for science. It's vital for everyone's personal pursuit of happiness.

To our surprise, we found that the cash transfer cut homelessness by 99 days, increased spending on rent, food, transit, and durable goods, and the reduced reliance on social services generated societal savings of $8,277 (net savings of $777) per person/yr.

The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.

The AI hype (positive and negative) seems to totally ignore the fundamental nature of a machine designed to make things that look like other things it found on the internet.

I don't know if it's gamer culture and self-help culture cross-fertilizing or what, but imagining that "min-maxing" and optimization are solutions to the problem of how to be / how to live in the world seems like a weirdly popular category mistake lately?

The fact that Bari Weiss is a liar is the very reason a pathological liar like Musk hired her to do the "expose" in the first place.

This is going to make me sound like an absolute crank but I feel like adding unnecessary hardware/software and tech to already well known simple electronic items is an attempt to normalize further encroachment on "right to repair" and should be screamed at.

Writing software for the cloud ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a lambda or bounce too close to a Kubernetes cluster and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?
