I was delighted to get to write this piece. Usually I have to keep my demography takes "demography, with a veiled hint of faith." Was nice to be able to lay out what I think the stakes really are for churches.
Happy to have @lymanstoneky debut @AmReformer discussing an important study he and his colleagues @FamStudies recently published on cultural factors influencing fertility and ways Christians can think about creating a culture that supports and encourages having children.

What's more, we found that friends *celebrating* babies had the biggest predictive effect. We care what people think! Lauding people for doing the work of creating a whole new life can make a huge difference to our experience and willingness to have children.
What makes people want or intend to have more kids? Well, @PeterRFB and @DrJasonCarroll and I show in a new @FamStudies report that one simple answer may be: friends who are more supportive of them having kids! Peer influences matter for fertility.

Proud of Cotton Mather Fellow Nick Solheim with a strong response. 🔊☝️

You’d have never seen this during the toilet paper shortage of Covid. I want to know how many rolls of toilet paper they go through to do this. That is serious commitment.

78-82% of the posts by Joel Berry and James Lindsay, in the last three months leading up to this election, have been targeted at people on the right. It’s an op.

Unreal. Lee County, AL Sheriff Jay Jones claimed joining ICE’s 287(g) program was a “liability” risk... right before firing deputy @CamHunt4Sheriff for challenging him on a stronger platform to remove more illegal aliens. Hunt ousted Jones in the Republican primary anyway. Now: -Progressive activists are coordinating a write-in campaign to keep Jones in office and keep ICE out. -Ethics records reveal the Sheriff’s Office allegedly geofenced Hunt’s home using taxpayer-funded fleet GPS tracking during the race. And we’re supposed to believe dodging 287(g) was ever just about “liability”? 🧐 Full investigation via Blaze Media theblaze.com/news/alabama-ic…

I'll say it: Christian nationalism as such basically does not exist! The survey evidence for it has long been recognized to be nonsense. It falls apart under basically any serious survey-methodological scrutiny, and has been torn apart from a dozen angles. This is another one!
I found this recent research by @jessesmithsoc really interesting. The survey asked the standard question about Christian Nationalism: *The federal government should declare the United States a Christian nation" And among people who agreed, an AI chatbot asked them what the respondents thought that meant. Very few people actually think about that statement the way that it's often framed in online discourse. They rarely had a coherent ideology. They rarely wanted religion coercion or a theocracy. Almost none even mentioned race in their response. I'm not saying Christian Nationalism doesn't exist. It certainly does. But how the average American thinks about these concepts is much more consequential than how it's discussed on Twitter.

Cotton Mather Fellow Dustin DeVito doing great work on Timcast yesterday. Worth a listen.
🚨🚨 Last night on @TimcastNews, I broke the news that Benevity is actively covering up its use of the Southern Poverty Law Center's "Hate List" in corporate gift matching 1/x

If we’re going to do death sentences at all, they should generally be done publicly. Amongst hunters there’s a common disdain for people who wince at the thought of shooting Bambi, but are happy to buy meat at the grocery store. Public executions are kind of like that. Many Americans want criminals to be “taken care of,” but it has to be done far away, in a clinical manner, where we don’t have to confront the reality of what occurs. You may tell yourself that the modern approach is nicer, and more merciful. But really, you prefer it because it doesn’t make you feel as uncomfortable. In the old American way doing things, the criminal often had a chance to give last words. Perhaps ask people forgiveness, or say a final, desperate prayer. Often a minister would attend, and say - without irony - “May God have mercy on your soul.” It was a public ritual that respected the gravity of sending a soul to eternity. It gave satisfaction to directly aggrieved parties. It gave broader reassurance in the rule of law. And yes, it deterred would-be criminals. Which approach seems more humane?

There’s a lot of courage in this video. @WilliamWolfe, for speaking bluntly about the New Right and American/Israeli relations. @NatConTalk, for platforming him, @AmandaMilius, @L0m3z and @docMJP. This is what adult coalitional behavior looks like. We need a lot more of it!
“Americans are war-weary. You might say, ‘Join the club.’ But we are not you [Israel]... [Even] many global war on terror veterans are disillusioned." — @WilliamWolfe at NatCon Jerusalem.

SECRETARY RUBIO: “Nationalism” became a dirty word. So we tore down our monuments, we condemned our own history, and in too many places we taught our children to be ashamed of the countries they would inherit. In the process we opened our borders, and outsourced our industry, and allowed our militaries to wither and to decay.

Anduril is building America's largest shipyard since WWII. This space needs bold investment and decisive action. In the 1790s, Baltimoore clippers were the fastest and most advanced sailing ships of their time. King George III didn't stand a chance. Time to run the same play.
Anduril is investing $3.7B into Arsenal-2. The next great American Shipyard.
