Yet for younger Canadians, including some millennials, it was a decade marked by a housing crisis, pandemic-induced precarity, delayed family formation, and a “failure to launch.” It’s notable then that as we go to the polls today, the Conservatives lead among 18 and 54 years old. They’re the party of the losers of the lost decade. The Liberals have a commanding lead with aged 60 years or older—the winners of the lost decade. One gets a sense that the growing gap between the intergenerational winners and losers will persist in our politics over the coming years as older Canadians consume a growing share of public expenditures including old age benefits and health care. Age-based polarization is likely to be a key feature of Canadian politics.
