Before I visited Pennsylvania, everyone warned me that Philadelphia people are the toughest, most impatient people in America. I believed them until I walked toward the front door of a Wawa gas station. I was still forty feet away in the parking lot, walking between rows of cars. A massive construction worker in steel-toe boots, carrying a twenty-four-ounce coffee in one hand and a paper-wrapped hoagie in the other, pushed open the glass door to leave. Then he saw me. He stopped. He planted his boot against the bottom of the door. And he waited. Forty feet is a very long distance when a grown man is holding a door for you in the wind. In Japan, to make a stranger wait carries great shame. So I broke into that awkward half-jog every man performs when he wishes to show gratitude without looking like he is fleeing a crime. "Go ahead, boss," he said as I passed. Ten minutes later, as I walked out with my own sandwich, I saw an elderly woman locking her car thirty feet away. I planted my foot against the glass. I held the door. Another man behind me held the inner door. Within seconds we had formed an impromptu honor guard of grumpy men holding glass doors in complete silence. Philadelphia may boo Santa Claus. But inside the three-foot radius of a Wawa doorway, they have the manners of the imperial court.

Great conversation on what is driving bond yields higher in the U.S., France and elsewhere and how worried we should be. Is it really about strong growth? I’m skeptical…

CHART OF THE DAY: The cost of hiring a supertanker to ship oil from the Persian Gulf to the Far East has climbed further, reaching ~$1.3 million per day. (It was less than $50,000 a day before the war started; and ~$1.1 million when I first published the chart in September)

I wonder how much political money is in these markets. It seems like a very cost-effective way to push your narrative

That seems like a lot, especially when not coming out of a recession

Sci fi becoming reality
In an extraordinary new paper, just out, in Nature @Sergiu_P_Pasca and his team genetically altered mice to make them "apallial" (missing a cortex). And then, postnatally, transferred organoids derived from human neural cells into that space. Three months later, in the animals measured, the cortex was 91.9% human-derived neural cells by volume. The result is not quite a mouse mouse (albeit I would still say, it's a mouse!), and certainly not anything like a human. Nothing the researchers measured suggests these animals have human-like experiences. What a model like this promises for neurological disease modeling and drug discovery cannot be overstated. It's nothing short of an extraordinary breakthrough. It also raises complex ethical questions (to be clear, these researchers carefully engaged external ethicists (I was one of them), and followed every ethical and legal guideline possible.) Which is why In a forthcoming commentary, Anil Seth and I explore what an ethical roadmap forward would be for this work. We address whether these mice chimeras could have any human-like capacities, how we might measure and know, and who, and how, we decide together what the next steps in this research should be.

You can eat the same thing for breakfast every single day for like 20 years in a row and no one will say anything. It's normal. You eat the same thing for dinner for a month straight and people call you psychotic

What’s a successful trader to me? Can you consistently make money, each year, with minimal drawdowns? Can you support the lifestyle you want with your trading profits? As for trading substacks, have you learned something that makes you money? Do you extract value from the ones you subscribe to? If yes, then it’s a good sub! It’s all just not that serious everyone! ❤️

I think the biggest reason most fail at retail trading is pain avoidance. Adding to losers, staying in a trade too long that is going no where. Taking profits too early because you spent 30 minutes red and now are green (sweet baby jesus trade.) General rule for me in a trade is if it doesn't quickly move in the direction I'm expecting I get out. I'll flatten before my stop loss many more times than my stop loss getting hit. My stop loss is there for the "oh shit" moments. Closing a losing trade you stop worrying about the trade and open yourself up for the next set up. Heck, I may get right back in the trade. Transaction costs are minimal these days. When I first got into trading in the 90s... I remember the excitement when E-Trade dropped commissions to 9.95/side. lol.
