#Brazil’s election: end of right-wing “wave” or end of anti-incumbency? Or maybe it’s all about @LulaOficial! 🤔 As I argued in @wpreview, Latin American voters have barely moved ideologically & grade incumbents on delivery. Lula ran on record-low unemployment & a 15% welfare increase w/ approval underwater at 48-50, against a highly polarizing opponent, & won a narrow, conditional verdict. His 4th term opens w/ an opposition majority in Congress, public debt above 82% of GDP, & Flávio refusing to concede. worldpoliticsreview.com/lati…

Let’s try something for a second. Pretend you’ve never seen a single poll this cycle. You don’t know what the generic ballot average is, you don’t know any polling averages in any Senate or governor’s race, and you don’t know what Trump’s job approval is. Forget about historical polling bias. And pretend you’ve never seen any hackish/wishcasting early voting analysis. And consider the following: — Republican and Democratic groups are spending most of their money in more than a half-dozen Senate races where Trump won by double-digit margins in 2024, including states like Kansas that haven’t elected a Democratic Senator since FDR was president. — Republican and Democratic groups are spending money defending dozens of House seats that Trump won by double-digit margins in 2024, including some where he won by over 20 points. — In the home stretch, Trump is campaigning in deep red states like Mississippi and South Carolina. — Republican statewide candidates (e.g., Rick Jackson in Georgia, Dan Patrick in Texas) are publicly begging rural voters to vote early because they are openly panicking about their relative turnout so far. — Trump instructed the Justice Department to sue to pre-emptively block the certification of the Senate results in Alaska if the Republican candidate loses. — Nearly all of Republicans’ closing message attacks are some form of trying to tie their very-clearly-not-socialist Democratic opponents to socialism, and/or trying to focus their race on trans issues instead of kitchen table issues (e.g., inflation/affordability). — Republican candidates running in deep red states and districts that Democrats could not imagine winning in their wildest dreams (e.g., Arkansas Senate, Wyoming House), are going on the offensive against their Democratic opponents down the stretch, because they aren’t quite sure where the bottom is going to be. — Republican candidates in double-digit Trump districts are quietly scrubbing all mentions of Trump from their campaign websites. — Latino candidates in deeply Latino areas that swung heavily toward Trump in 2024 (e.g., in South Texas and South Florida) are campaigning against Trump on ICE overreach — something that was never essentially unthinkable ~18 months ago. — Self-described moderate Democratic candidates running in Trump-double-digit states like Josh Turek in Iowa are running on things like price controls. — Qualitative race raters like Cook & Sabato’s Crystal Ball — who get access to tons of internal polling from both parties that never see the light of day — have been shifting their ratings of dozens of seats towards Democrats on a weekly basis in October. Add that all together — what does that signal to you about how both parties, and neutral outside observers, currently view the national environment?

New: Brent Taylor is the front-runner for one of Memphis’ congressional districts, recently redrawn from majority Black to majority white. As state senator, he repeatedly used his power to supersede local officials — and the will of the city’s voters. propub.li/3W7xuCl

Funny how @GregAbbott_TX always has time to tell everyone who will listen, about @GinaHinojosaTX, but he NEVER had time to tell her these things to her face during a debate.

#KansasSenate Adam Hamilton on transgender rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself.” “I’m gonna love the trans person as well as the straight person, male or female. We have to do better than picking on small groups. What’s happened is we’ve turned a group of people into a campaign issue because it polls well.”

🇰🇵#DPRK national TV's 18 min documentary details #KimJongUn's visit to🇨🇳China on Oct. 24, while crossing the newly inaugurated bridge that links the two countries. Any feedback from President Trump on this?
What are the signals sent? 🇰🇵#DRPK leader Kim Jong Un made a surprise visit to China, by crossing the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge into🇨🇳Dandong. China's top political advisor Wang Huning greeted Kim at the square of the Memorial Hall of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea and accompanied him to present a flower basket to the memorial tower. The timing is on the 76th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteers' entry into the DPRK to fight in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

A Texas Democrat from the Austin area wins a hotly contested statewide primary, then runs in an open seat race against a deeply flawed Republican millionaire opponent who runs one of the worst campaigns in modern history. The race becomes extraordinarily negative, and sets national records for spending. The Democrat wins by 2.5 points. Texas flips blue. The year is 1990.
