If you want to know how shafted the middle class is look no further than this stat.
UK new minimum wage will now be £27,456 per year
Higher-rate tax bracket (40%) 50,270.
That is 1.8x difference between the two.
When new Labour won In 1997 there was a 5x difference.
Absolutely crazy. We need to support the squeezed middle.

We were going to post the match report, but we've broken the internet so leave it with us 😂

A £27,456 baseline wage against a frozen £50,270 threshold means the entire career progression of the British working class is being squeezed into an absurdly narrow band.
Factor in fiscal drag and student loan repayments, and middle earners face punitive marginal tax rates before they have even built a modest savings pot.
Mandating wage hikes without underlying productivity growth does not raise living standards; it simply fuels inflation and destroys the incentive to upskill.

Back in 2010, the minimum wage was £12,064 and the 'higher earner' band started at £43,875.
You only paid 40% tax once you were earning 3.6x the minimum wage.
There was clear incentive to progress, learn and aspire for more.
As things stand, you now start paying 40% tax once you earn £50,270 which is just 1.83x the minimum wage.
If it was the same multiple as 2010, the 'higher earning' band would be £98,841 and everyone below this amount would be paying 20%.
Someone on £98,841 is effectively losing out on £9714.20 net per year if the bandings had simply moved in line with previous multiples relative to minimum wage.
This is one of the reasons why the middle class is being eroded and why there's a cost of living crisis in the UK.
An increase to £13.20p/h equates to a minimum wage of £27,456, based on a 40 hour week.
Once you factor in employers NI and basic pension contributions, the MINIMUM cost to hire a 21 year old for a company would be £31,461.
This is before you factor in any overarching business costs like office space, laptops, phone, software, training, support staff, vehicles etc.
This is going to be devastating to SME's who cant put together a simple 12 month budget without the goalposts being moved & their margins squeezed.
It'll also be catastrophic to youngsters opportunities because businesses will simply not be able to afford to hire them.
What's also incredible is that anything above £50,270 is seen as 'high earnings' in the UK and is taxed at 40%!
We are governed by financially and economically illiterate morons.
This will not end well.

Just shy of £23,000 pounds separating those on the minimum wage and those now in the higher tax bracket. This is completely unsustainable, the squeeze on middle earners and the pressure this places on employers is nothing short of a scandal.

A slight break from my usual 90s football posts to say, I would love to get my 6 year old one of these Pokémon 30th anniversary boxes for Christmas. But you can't get them because people like these buy the whole lot from shops that allow it to happen. All to then resell them on at a massively marked up price. Happens all of the time.
If you're wondering why there's never anything in B&M...

The vast majority of us all signed up to a rebuild. A season of transition. We accepted we would win some, and lose some.
However, it doesn’t make the manor of the defeats at Leeds, Coventry and today any more palatable.
We lack identity, are far too easy to play through, and look completely toothless up top.
Early days, but that doesn’t negate the real issues that everyone can see.

Why do old people (like me) go to a garden centre for coffee and cake, or lunch?
Easy to park.
Free to park.
No one working on a laptop.
No one in a zoom call.
No one playing tik toks on speaker.
No one shouting into their phone.
The guy on the counter isn’t having a phone conversation while he serves you.
Tables are clean.
Toilets are clean.
Coffee is the same as most coffee shops, cakes are better.

Hey. Labour MPs. And other MPs, too.
Are you on your way to the Commons for the Courts and Tribunals Bill?

Pub and restaurant visits in the UK have dropped overall. Meaningful Vision data shows a 6.8% fall in 2025, with further declines of around 7% in Q1-Q2 2026 for pubs/restaurants. Pub footfall fell 5-7% most months in 2026 (brief World Cup bounce in July). Closures continue at roughly one pub a day.

No, you cannot walk 10,000 steps daily, get 8 hours of sleep, cook every night, clean every day, take care of a family, make time for your own hobbies, and still be productive at work every day. This is not just propaganda, it is nonsense. Free yourself from it.

Newcastle went from relegation candidates to Champions League in one year. They spent a lot of money to transform that relegation squad into one that won the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League twice in three years. They had no quality players to sell, it was a bad team, so…
They were forced to sell players they didn’t want to lose to comply with PSR rules, including their best academy player in Elliot Anderson for £35m as it was “pure profit.”
But it is the wages that really kill them. Newcastle can’t offer the same wages at the Big six with their ingrained financial advantage. SCR has baked this in,
So when they get an elite talent, they can’t keep hold of them. Hence Isak, Gordon, Tonali and Bruno all leaving in the space of 12 months. All but one of them went to a domestic rival.
Newcastle “competed” for a short period of time and then, like Aston Villa, they were forced to sell or players demanded to leave. And this process is now repeated every summer. Well run clubs like Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth are perfect to keep the eco system running. They identify and develop players for the richer clubs to buy. It’s their business model and it’s pretty much the same business model #nufc have had to switch to now.
There has always been a food chain in football in my lifetime but that food chain is now enshrined by the financial rules
Unregulated spending is not what we need either. Nobody serious is saying that. No club should just be able to spend what they want based on the wealth of their owners, but the rules need to be looked at.
This isn’t a dig at @RorySmith either. He has raised another strand to the debate in his usual eloquent style. I’m just offering my view.

Spurs and Villa and sort of Newcastle all prove that you can "compete." Villa went from the Championship to the CL in six years. That's amazing. They should be happy, and proud. And yes it's hard to win. It should be hard to win. That is the point.
