Alupas of coastal Karnataka (Tulu Nadu) claimed Pandyavamsha and Soma Kula (lunar lineage), used double-fish emblem, titles like Pandya Chakravarti, and coin legends "Sri Pandya Dhananjaya". Madurai Pandyas also claimed mythic lunar/Pandya origins. Such puranic lineage claims were common pan-India for legitimacy among many dynasties. Alupas were local coastal rulers linked to the Bunt community, with Kannada/Tulu inscriptions and no proven descent from Madurai Pandyas.

Scholarly sources including R. Narasimhacharya identify both Nolambas and Banas as native Kannada dynasties of SE Karnataka (Nolambavadi and Perumbanappadi/Kolar core). They used mainly Kannada and Sanskrit inscriptions while claiming Pallava or Mahabali descent for legitimacy, a common practice. Border links existed but do not make them Tamil.
