Watching this World Series is a baseball coach’s dream. Two-strike approaches. Two-out hitting. Cuts and relays. Baserunning. Situational baseball. EVERYTHING we preach all year is on display. I can practically hear my players’ eyes rolling when I bring up this series for the 37th time next season. It’s gonna be awesome.

Will the thrill !!! It’s counter intuitive to think that “up swinging” would lead to ground balls , you’d think definitely pop ups . More times than not it’s the exact opposite that’s why we see so many weak ground balls and strike outs . (Among other reasons) .

There’s something underrated about a hitter who realizes he doesn’t need to do damage in every at-bat. Runner on second, nobody out, hard ground ball to the right side isn’t exciting, but moving that runner to third can completely change the inning. Baseball got smarter in a lot of ways, but sometimes the simple play is still the right one.

At some point, baseball has to get back to valuing ballplayers and not just numbers on a screen. Give me the Freddie Freemans, the Buster Poseys, Hunter Pences, Pablo Sandovals, Michael Youngs, Ian Kinslers of the world. Guys who just flat out know how to play the game. Everyone wants to talk launch angle and exit velo, but what happened to valuing a quality at bat?” The 9-pitch battle that might end in an out, but forces a pitcher to show everything he’s got. The guy who hits behind the runner, takes what’s given, or just refuses to give a pitcher an easy inning. Those at-bats might not look sexy in the box score, but they show up in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Some of these dudes could absolutely leave the yard too. That’s the point. They weren’t one-dimensional. Somewhere along the way, we confused measurable tools with knowing how to win baseball games. I’m not against analytics or hitting the ball hard, but there is an art to winning that you can’t fully measure. We need more guys who know how to play baseball, not just hitters, not just athletes, ballplayers. And I promise you, those dudes never go out of style

The Rays believe in Strike one. They hit the FB. They run the bases well. They play good defense. Bottom half of order know who they are and execute. Move runners if they need to. More importantly they don't strike out!! Sometimes people complicate this game. They keep it simple

Rutger is running out of bodies on defense. They never earned the “s” and they are on their way to losing the “r”.

I watched some of this yesterday and I love the way Joey Votto talks about hitting the ball in the air to the pull side. Unfortunately it’s being taught by a lot of people today who don’t understand how trying to pull the ball in the air is a recipe for failure! I believe this approach is why we have seen batting averages plummet and strikeouts skyrocket. The longer your swing is the less adjustability you have! Joey Votto gets it! Some of the best baseball players I ever coached spent their falls in shoulder pads or on a pitch. They arrived in the spring as competitors, not just players. The scoreboard pressure, the different locker room, the coach with a different voice. You cannot buy that at a showcase.

Nothing beats watching players compete in games. Showcases are for show. Games reveal who can actually play. One game isn’t enough, but I’d rather evaluate multiple games than one workout. There are game players, and there are showcase players & sometimes both.

HS players: learn how to defend adequately at one/multiple positions. I love players that can hit as much as anyone, but there is one spot in the lineup for players that can’t defend. Lack of defensive ability is one of the biggest barriers to playing time, especially for FR.

Highly functioning systems can withstand the natural ups and downs of talent that enter public high school programs. Good systems make good teams.
Coaches who execute systems outperform coaches who rely on raw talent every single spring. Fix your backend program engine before opening day arrives.

The catcher glove drag from the ground up is a training technique and not an in-game technique. It was designed to train getting under the ball and pushing low pitches up. Developed for feel. That much glove movement isn’t needed in game.

Another summer baseball observation. Hitters, every single is a double until it's not. It doesn't work the other way around. Too many guys content with one bag or the next bag, few guys hunting to score.

Great question from @LeifSkodnick. Kyle Branch is an easy kid to root for. The worst hitter in the tournament by OPS, showed up to work everyday and finally broke through. 8 RBI’s in the championship series, 6 in game 3. xitter.cf/HurrdatSports/status/2…

Exit velocity, bat speed, and all the data matter. At some point, you do need to hit certain physical thresholds to compete at the highest levels of baseball. But once you get around players who are all talented, the separator usually isn’t another 2 mph of bat speed. It’s mental toughness. Resilience. Confidence. The ability to handle failure. Having a consistent approach. Showing up every day. Competing when things aren’t going your way. The numbers might get you noticed. Your mindset is what determines how far you go. I’ve seen plenty of players with elite metrics fail, and plenty of players with average metrics maximize every ounce of their ability because of who they were between the ears. Train the body. Don’t neglect the mind.

Lost to #2 Eastbrook in the Regional 8-1. Finished 21-12 and Sectional Champions. Special group of young men. So proud of them. Thank you Seniors. Grateful for the opportunity to work with Colt, Alister, Kaleb, Owen T, and Owen S. Never easy to say goodbye, but my heart is full.
