The History of Britain's Censorship Agencies
An amazing look inside 10 censorship agencies and the UK's favorite tactic: Disbanding and remaking censorship agencies whenever lawmakers ask if they've been weaponized against the British people 🧵

If banning the SAT got your attention, the government says "Hold my beer: we did it for 44 years" :-[
1980, Carter killed PACE - the national, score-ordered merit exam for federal jobs. It had a hard pass-bar of 70.
They said it was a 5-year fix, with a new test coming.
But they built-in a hand grenade: any new test needed plaintiffs' lawyers' approval. For 44 years (!!!) no new test, and no challenge.
Hiring flipped from objective merit to internal promotion, vague notions such as "Outstanding Scholar", being in top 10% of *your* classroom, or self assessment.

"The perfect embodiment of this rapprochement is the concept of “Islamophobia”, which left-wing academics, journalists and intellectuals have brandished for decades to shield Islam from legitimate criticism, much to the delight of Islamists."
Islamo-Leftism Is Not a Conspiracy Theory
It’s an unrequited love affair
“The Red-Green alliance does not rest on covert coordination behind the scenes, but on ideological kinship, a shared enemy (Western civilization, modernity and capitalism) and a hefty dose of naivety on one side.”
“The bargain is straightforward: leftists coddle Muslims and give them preferential treatment, while Muslims respond by voting for left-wing parties.”
“What makes this love affair tragic is that it is mostly unrequited.”
“There may be ‘Queers for Palestine’, but there are no ‘Queers in Palestine’.”

I don't have a strong view on whether Holmes should be in prison or not. But I think its fascinating how our culture(s) oscillate between the social norms of gender equality & the social norms of chivalry. This argument is an example of the latter xitter.cf/TheFP/status/211261250…
Elizabeth Holmes’s crimes were egregious. But far fewer women, with or without children, should be incarcerated at all, writes Tyler Cowen. thefp.com/p/tyler-cowen-eliz…

Another study showing that peers, not professors, shift opinion leftward during university.
Left-leaning professors cater to left-leaning students.
Data shows very few conservative profs, so student priors are reinforced, not challenged.

We know that culture drives fertility more than money these days, but what specifically is it about culture?
In wonderful report published today, @FamStudies surveyed 10,000 people around the world to learn what it is about culture that leads people to have kids or not. 🧵.
In this new report, @lymanstoneky @PeterRFB and @DrJasonCarroll begin the work of opening the black box of fertility culture. We explore the specific factors across and within societies that lead some people to have many more children than others.
We used a survey of nearly 10,000 people spanning over a dozen countries.
Most of our survey covered questions that have rarely, if ever, been
surveyed cross-nationally, or have not been surveyed in a research program that also. As a result, we can present first-of-a-kind evidence on what specific. cultural norms typify successful pronatal cultures.
Here are our main findings:
1. Friends and family matter to fertility intentions.
2. The family lives of celebrities (and the visibility of celebrity family lives)
influence the family lives of fans.
3. Effective pronatal beliefs entail positive attitudes towards family life, but not necessarily any particular sense of obligation.
4. Division of household labor does not have a big impact on fertility.
5. Active faith matters to fertility desire and outcomes.
6. A willingness to take risks and an optimism about the future both predict intentions to have children and the number of children a respondent already has.

Using the power of AI, I've compiled data from 30+ countries concerning how well their migrant groups do on a variety of metrics (education, crime, income, PISA etc.). There's a lot of oddities with particular countries or datasets, but overall, you get a 0.80 correlation with national IQs adjusted for migrant selection (education level of migrants vs. host average).
All data public, you can explore and download it all. Post away! I am also missing certain pesky countries that make it difficult to obtain good data, like Belgium.

Just a few hours after Macron spoke on TV about the situations, promising that the government would be inflexible with people who engage in violence, groups of looters are freely roaming Paris and breaking into stores.
There are even videos where you see them breaking into residential buildings and the police seem totally overwhelmed and in many places are nowhere to be seen. This is completely surreal and I don't think anything like that has ever happened before.
