It is hard to imagine that cutting away a portion of the stomach could prevent future Alzheimer’s Disease but here, in our first of many stories to come, we show just that! SG’s effects on the brain are profound and long lasting! @LammingLab @WiscSurgery

Why do muscle fibres shrink with age?
Not because myofibrils get smaller — because there are fewer of them.
We followed this from whole-muscle down to individual myofibrils, in humans and mice, across ageing and disuse.

1/ Why do muscles atrophy with aging and disuse?
Is it because each tiny little myofibril gets smaller… or is it because we lose myofibrils?
In our new study, we addressed this in humans and mice. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor…

Branched chain aminos (e.g. leucine & valine) help build muscle but also activate mTOR. Here, Lamming & team report that restricting valine extends the lifespan of male mice 23%, indicating high protein diets deserve scrutiny from a longevity perspective 🐭
I am delighted to be able to share the latest study from the @LammingLab, “Lifelong restriction of dietary valine has sex-specific benefits for health and lifespan in mice” led by former graduate student @mariahcalubag!

Valine restriction improves metabolic health in mice, promotes leanness and glycemic control across ages, and reduces frailty, cancer prevalence and senescent cell burden in both sexes while increasing median male lifespan by 23%.

Men lose nearly a year of life to a molecule that's supposed to boost their brains.
Tyrosine, a dopamine precursor taken by millions as a cognitive supplement.
@uk_biobank Mendelian randomization (MR), n=272,475: it causally shortens male lifespan by 0.91 years (p=0.01)
No significant effect in women.
Men naturally carry higher circulating tyrosine than women. The authors suggest this single amino acid difference may partly explain the male-female lifespan gap.
Nuance: MR captures lifelong endogenous exposure, not supplement effects. But the finding held across multiple MR methods and every sensitivity test.
If you're supplementing tyrosine daily, this paper deserves your attention.

Fasting is required for many of the benefits of calorie restriction in the 3xTg mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease
👉 “Our results demonstrate that fasting is a critical component of the benefits of CR on AD, suggesting that fasting alone or fasting-mimicking diets might help to prevent or delay AD in humans without requiring reductions in energy intake.”
