Here, Sandeep congratulates himself for not taking part in the “tribal self-congratulatory groupthink” by engaging in “good faith” with some of the most consistent bad faith actors.
Of course he found common ground with We Heart Seattle and Twolf.
They represent the “left” and the “right” boundaries of the narrow Overton window on approaches to homelessness that are acceptable to the political establishment.
He’s doing the insufferable contrarian centrist thing where he pretends to be speaking truth to power (“power” here means the unthinking masses out in the “discourse”) while literally being a mouthpiece of actual political power (i.e. the people who sign his checks).
So bold! What a maverick!
Last night I did a very un-Seattle thing: I participated in a @weheartseattle panel discussion about some of Seattle’s most polarizing, hot button issues - homelessness and addiction - with people “on the other side” with whom I substantively disagree on some important and consequential things.
I feel like we dipped below the surface of what divides us as we talked about seemingly incompatible approaches like “Recovery First” vs. “Housing First,” which has some value, but even better I also think we just scratched the surface of where we actually (in some instances surprisingly) converged towards some important and potentially consequential opportunities to find common ground.
No doubt @lisadaugaard and I will take some flack for engaging in good faith dialogue with, rather than condemning, San Francisco-based recovery advocate @Twolfrecovery and Washington Policy Center’s Eric Zimmerman, at an event organized by @weheartfounder Andrea Suarez no less, and moderated by @KIROCharlie Harger, but I’m glad I did it.
Naive fool and unrepentant sellout that I am, it seems to me we would benefit from more of these sorts of nuanced and sometimes fraught conversations, rather than dining out yet again on the oh-so-satisfying empty calories of self-righteous condemnation and tribal self-congratulatory groupthink that still dominates much of the menu of Seattle’s civic discourse these days.

New: Through a series of complex agreements with cities, the White House built a massive license plate camera database accessible to the feds. The program aggregates data across license plate companies (Flock, Axon, more) & is searchable by many agencies:

The homeless woman murdered in Central Park was a beloved artist and birdwatcher who made beautiful pieces dedicated to birds. She went by Lee Rogers, but also was known as Elise Bainbridge Hill. Her art was awesome. I hope her life story is shared and not just the grisly details

This is why so many crimes against the homeless go unsolved.
Cops go into an encampment to canvas for witnesses, and it turns into a warrant check.

When Thomas Wilkins was homeless, a permanent supportive housing program helped get him back on his feet & maintain stable housing for 21 years.
Trump's efforts to cut funds for such programs put Wilkins & thousands like him at risk of homelessness again. buff.ly/XN6IJ8X

The more sensational aspects of this story (the mother "turning tricks" while the son sat outside) were never substantiated.
The details come from a guy named Andrew Steelsmith, who got them from a woman who claimed to be a sex worker and also said that an unnamed SPD officer was pimping her out.
Steelsmith claimed that the boy was filthy and malnourished. CPS checked on them multiple times, finding that the boy appeared clean and healthy, had ample blankets and bedding, and "nourishing food."
The family had been evicted four months before all of this. The father was employed. The mother was apparently using, but the child was in his father's care, and the mother only came to visit. Obviously, it's atrocious that any child lives on the streets (it's far too common in this city). Still, it's a much greater crime for the state to take a child from his family because of some made-up bullshit.

Palantir billionaire Joe Lonsdale has been shaping Trump's approach to homelessness, which "is very much like the Trump approach to immigrants: Round them up and make them disappear." These policies are cruel, expensive, and make homelessness worse. buff.ly/g6yA9JA

Joe Lonsdale, billionaire co-founder of Palantir, has been shaping Trump's policies to arrest homeless people and throw them in detention camps because he "doesn't want to be 'bothered' by the poor who might be perturbed by the inequality he perpetuates." arcamax.com/politics/fromthe…

Homelessness is not a personal failure. It is a policy failure.
That’s why @RepMaxwellFrost and I introduced the No Homeless Detention Centers Act, legislation that will stop Republican efforts to spend taxpayer dollars forcing homeless people into detention centers.

What's the median rent in those 42 states?
If you're arguing "homelessness isn't a housing issue," you need to explain why these two maps are virtually identical.
If you're arguing that it's primarily a drug issue, why are there so few homeless in West Virginia?
Replying to @DivestSPD
There are about 42 states that DON'T have this problem so there is another way just visit any non sanctuary state or states that actually put things in action and not just empty promises and you'll see.

By Andrea's own reckoning, she's not doing that much work.
In 2025, We Heart Seattle did 52 individual cleanups (i.e., once a week) and "accrued 3800 volunteer hours" (equivalent to about 1.5 FTE).
Andrea made $118k.
Replying to @DivestSPD
How about you spend just 2 days, matching Andrea hour for hour on the street, and then report back to us.
The homeless are given free housing, free drug paraphernalia but you don’t seem concerned with how they pay for their drugs. Theft, prostitution, dealing etc..

One year later, Trump's anti-homeless Executive Order is making homelessness worse. It's just one part of Trump’s extensive racist and authoritarian agenda, targeting and dehumanizing people whom he mistakenly thinks are disposable. davisvanguard.org/2026/07/tr…

#Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale is bankrolling laws that criminalize homelessness—while his VC firm profits from prisons and surveillance. Literally building the pipeline from the streets to the prisons.😡
Tech bro billionaires have no business coming to our communities to profit off the suffering of our homeless neighbors. But Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale is doing just that. Read about his connections to anti-homeless laws, prisons, & surveillance: buff.ly/0s6qatl

By “teeth” she means felony charges that would make this teen unemployable for many years.
LEAD’s not perfect, but at least she’ll get a caseworker and some follow-up, which is more than she would get if Andrea dropped her off at a sober house and left.
A late night trying to get this 18-year-old girl — arrested for fentanyl possession — into a safe stay, medical detox, and recovery path.
The plan was ready… until LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion) had to get involved.
She took off.
This is why we keep losing kids to these streets. We need treatment FIRST not more programs that let them walk away. Watch how the system breaks down. 😰 @SeaCityAttorney @MayorofSeattle There has to be teeth to these diversion programs.

ICE claimed that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo drove his van into one of their SUVs and later attempted to run an ICE agent over. The first thing our local media pointed out was the lack of damage on Araujo’s van. One of the best investigative journalists in Houston, Jeremy Rogalski, found surveillance camera footage showing ICE ramming the van minutes before shots were fired.
The ICE story is already falling apart.
